Background/Theme
Section.80 is Kendrick's first full length album after several mixtapes and EP's. It was released on July 2, 2011 by Top Dawg Entertainment. Throughout Section.80, Kendrick adresses a range of societal issues and personal struggles he and others faced growing up in Compton California. He reflects on themes such as poverty, drug addiction, gang violence, and racial inequality.
Commercial/Critical Success
The 16 track album containing songs such as "HiiighPoWer", "A.D.H.D." and "Ronald Reagan Era" was certified gold on April 14, 2017 with over 500,000 units sold. Section.80 combines elements of Political Hip hop and alternative rap with jazzy production.
Overview
Overall, Section .80 was a big sucess that caught many people's eyes, and began to pave the way to Kendrick's career. It's mostly agreed upon that this is Kendrick's worst album, but that's not to say it's bad, Kendrick just hadn't quite developed all of the skills he's praised for.
